The Upright Readings

change, reversal, boredom, improvement, rebirth, suspension, change, Pause, surrender, letting go, new perspectives

The infinite blessings of Maharishi Vishvamitra were bestowed on Trishanku, the king of the Ivakshu dynasty. In the same way, you have the infinite blessings of your Guru on you. Due to the blessings of the Guru, tremendous change is coming into your life. Some important changes are taking place. Let it be, something is improving in your boring life. As if everything is being reborn.

This card is a 'Maybe' card.

Suffering pain, suspension of disease is happening. Wrong people will now leave your life with a break. The thought of surrendering to you will be in their mind. Those people had once created a conspiracy against you. But be calm. Let go. Forgive them with a good perspective. Let go. Don't hit the corpse, they are dead.

The Reverse Readings

alse prophecy, useless sacrifice, unwillingness, Delays, resistance, stalling, indecision

Study this card then you will find useless sacrifices by you for others; which is not needed! You don't get the credit for what you do in excitement. You have to face reluctance to start any new work. Probably because of that, there may be a delay. The resistance of your conscience will force you to stop the work. Against your desire, you will reach a state of indecision. That is, exactly the state of the hanged Man, Trishanku.

The Hanged Man

I know now every Indian surprised by looking at the resemblance of the cards. (rather a duplication of the image. )

European artist was unable to understand Trishanku. Therefore, he named it ‘Hanged Man’. The image of Trishanku is there for more than six thousand years B.C.

The Hanged Man is hanging himself by Right leg. The left leg is folded. Both the arms are folded, i.e. Tadasana mudra and namaskar .. Exactly as Trishanku.

Maharshi Vishvamitra sends King Ivakshu to heaven with his physical body. This was not allowed by Lord Indra. Indra sent him back. Then Vishvamitra created another Heaven for him. Thus Ivakshu hanged between heaven and the earth.

( interesting detailed story of Trishanku.)

King Trishanku was a righteous king of the Ikswaku dynasty who ruled his subjects very dearly. Although he followed all the Vedic rituals and rules necessary for a pious life, he had a strange wish of going to heaven with the mortal body. He approaches his preceptor Rishi Vashisht and expresses his desire and asks him to help him go to heaven with his mortal body.

Rishi Vashisht is surprised and tries to explain that the task was impossible, as it was only the soul which was pure, but not the mortal body which perishes and it was only through the soul one could enter heaven. But Trishanku does not get convinced and insists upon going to heaven with his body. When Rishi Vashisht firmly refuses, Trishanku gets angry and gets up to punish Rishi Vashisht. Upset with the king’s arrogance, Rishi Vasishth’s son curses Trishanku to become a Chandal, an untouchable.

Trishanku is dejected, yet does not leave his determination and approaches Rishi Vishvamitra, who at that time was the arch-rival of Rishi Vashisth and performing penance to be as superior as Rishi Vasishth. When Rishi Vishvamitra listens to the wish of Trishanku, he feels that this would make him greater than Rishi Vasishth and agrees to send him to heaven with the mortal body. Rishi Vishvamitra promises Trishanku his desire, offers all the power of his penance performed for several years, and sends Trishanku to the heavens. However, he gets a setback as the Gods deny entry to Trishanku as his desire was not righteous and push him back to earth.

Rishi Vishvamitra gets mighty angry at the behavior of the Gods and stops the falling Trishanku. He then creates whole new heaven at the place where Trishanku was hanging upside down in mid-air. The heaven Rishi Vishvamitra creates was even more splendid than the original heaven and all were awestruck by the power of Rishi Vishvamitra in creating a separate world altogether.

Rishi Vishvamitra then tells Trishanku that he would be there in this heaven and names it the Trishanku Swarg. However, as Trishanku had committed a mistake in offending Rishi Vasishth and also asking for something undesirable, he was to be in his heaven hanging upside down all time. Trishanku understands his mistake and abides by it. The Gods praise the power of Rishi Vishvamitra and the sage having fulfilled the promise given to Trishanku, goes back to continue his penance.

It is hence believed and told by our elders that when one cannot take a decision properly or is in a dilemma regarding good and bad, he or she is in the Trishanku Swarg hanging indecisively, instead of being firm and taking the right decision.

It is indeed the greatest of Rishi Vishvamitra who gave us such insights through his life, and also our little stories from the Puranas which guide us to walk in the right way through their knowledge and teach us to be ethical and righteous in our life.
